Study Strengthens EV Emissions Case as India Focuses on Cost, Convenience and Appeal
A new Science study strengthens the emissions case for EVs, while VinFast highlights lower ownership costs, free charging, maintenance, incentives and expanding infrastructure to make electric cars more practical in India.
The research challenges the conventional argument against early EV replacement, which suggests that replacing an already-built gasoline vehicle creates another manufacturing footprint unnecessarily. The study found that the higher carbon cost of manufacturing an EV can be offset by the lower emissions generated during its operation.
In the study’s representative US SUV scenario, replacing a combustion vehicle during its second year reduced cumulative emissions over a 16-year period by 44 percent. The EV’s manufacturing “carbon debt” was paid back within three years. Across the modeled vehicle scenarios, 92 percent resulted in a net emissions reduction, while fleet-average assumptions produced a 58 percent benefit.
The researchers said that “electrifying vehicle powertrains provides an order-of-magnitude-larger reduction in use-phase emissions” than replacing an old ICE vehicle with a newer ICE vehicle. They ultimately identified “large carbon mitigation benefits across a wide range of scenarios,” while noting that the outcome depends on vehicle efficiency, battery-production emissions and the electricity grid.
The findings strengthen the environmental case for replacing a gas-guzzling vehicle with a new EV. In emerging markets such as India, however, the appeal of electric vehicles is likely to depend on factors beyond reducing personal carbon footprints.
For Indian customers, a vehicle serves as transportation, technology, a status symbol, family space and increasingly an extension of personal identity. That makes the EV proposition less about “saving the planet” and more about demonstrating why electric mobility makes practical sense.
Lower running costs, quieter driving, instant torque, connected features and the ability to charge at home can help position electrification as a lifestyle upgrade rather than an environmental sacrifice.
The ownership economics can also be compelling. VinFast’s India portfolio includes the VF 6 and VF 7 SUVs, alongside the seven-seat VF MPV 7. The VF MPV 7 is listed at INR 2.449 million, or about INR 24.49 lakh, before incentives. A comparison with a comparable gas-powered vehicle showed a significantly lower five-year ownership cost, even before counting free charging.
VinFast is also addressing the ownership experience beyond the initial vehicle purchase. The company offers free charging at V-Green stations through March 31, 2029, along with free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 km.
Customers switching from an ICE vehicle can receive cash support ranging from INR 138,000 for the VF 6 Earth to INR 214,000 for the VF 7 Sky Infinity, while INR 196,000 is available for the VF MPV 7.
VinFast is also expanding its retail ecosystem. The company recently inaugurated its 60th retail outlet in India and plans to establish 75 dealerships across more than 60 cities by the end of 2026.
On the charging front, VinFast’s strategic partner V-Green and HPCL are working to deploy EV chargers nationwide. V-Green has also partnered with RoadGrid to accelerate fast-charging deployment at fuel stations, smart cities and other high-demand locations.
The broader EV transition in India will depend on the details of ownership as much as the environmental benefits. Lower running costs, useful range, convenient charging, accessible service and desirable vehicles can determine whether consumer interest turns into actual EV ownership.
